- Maximum Baud Rate: 921.6 kbps
- Data Bits: 5, 6, 7, 8
- Stop Bits: 1, 1.5, 2
- Isolation: 3000 Vrms typical for isolated variants
- Connector: DB-9 female
- Driver: NI-Serial
- Operating Temperature: 0 °C to 55 °C
Functional Features
- Software-selectable serial protocol per port
- Channel-to-channel and field-side isolation
- NI-SERIAL and VISA support
- LabVIEW and third-party tool integration
- Deterministic serial communication through PXI backplane
Working Principle
The module converts PXI bus transactions into standard asynchronous serial communication. UART logic handles baud rate, framing, parity, and handshaking, while isolation circuitry protects the PXI system from ground loops and field-side transients.
Application Scenarios
- Industrial automation
- Device programming
- Instrument control
- Mixed serial-protocol test systems
- PLC and controller communication
- Legacy equipment integration
Installation Requirements
- Install in compatible PXI or PXI Express chassis
- Use shielded serial cables
- Install NI-Serial driver
- Terminate RS-485 buses correctly
- Verify port protocol before connecting devices
Usage Notes
- Match baud rate, data bits, stop bits, and parity on both ends
- Use proper RS-485 termination and biasing
- Do not exceed isolation voltage rating
- Avoid ground loops in multidrop networks
- Protect DB-9 pins from mechanical damage
