Product Short Description
Product Brief Introduction
This is a core serial communication interface module belonging to Emerson DeltaV distributed process control system S-series hardware lineup. It acts as a protocol bridge between DeltaV LocalBus backplane and external serial field instruments, PLCs, analyzers and third-party industrial devices. It realizes bidirectional serial data parsing, signal isolation and real-time data forwarding without additional signal conversion relays, certified for Class I Division 2 hazardous industrial locations.

- Configurable data buffer depth for high-speed burst serial data transmission
- Terminal block keyed lock mechanism prevents mismatched wiring with incompatible base units
Working Principle
The module receives power and control instructions through DeltaV LocalBus backplane from system controller. Internal dedicated communication MCU separates backplane digital logic and external field serial circuits via optocoupler isolation chips. Serial signal transceivers convert differential RS422/485 or single-ended RS232 electrical levels into internal digital signals, then perform protocol parsing, data caching and frame repackaging. Valid process variables, device status and alarm signals are uploaded to DeltaV control logic via backplane; downlink control commands from controller are converted to matching serial electrical signals and transmitted to external field equipment. All fault detection circuits continuously monitor channel impedance, voltage and signal integrity during operation.
Material Composition & Structural Characteristics
- Outer Housing: High-strength flame-retardant black ABS plastic shell, UL94 V-0 fire rating, anti-static coating
- Internal Circuit Substrate: Double-sided FR4 fiberglass PCB with tin-lead free immersion gold plating for corrosion resistance
- Isolation Components: High-speed industrial optocoupler chips, reinforced insulation up to 2500VAC withstand voltage
- Connection Interface: Gold-plated copper backplane edge connector; spring-cage terminal block mating port on front panel
- Mechanical Locking: Integrated plastic latch with stainless steel spring, fixed to DeltaV 8-slot vertical carrier rack
- Overall Dimension: Standard DeltaV single-slot width modular form factor, compact rack-mount design
Installation Requirements
- Must be installed on compatible DeltaV vertical I/O carrier base unit with D4 keyed terminal block slot
- Cabinet installation environment must meet IP20, no direct water splash or conductive dust accumulation
- Maintain minimum 20mm ventilation gap above and below module for heat dissipation
- Field serial wiring must use shielded twisted-pair cable, cable shield single-point grounded at cabinet earth bar
- Hazardous Zone 2 installation strictly follows Emerson document 12P2046, limited energy wiring limits must not be exceeded
- Backplane rack ground bus must connect to facility protective earth with 4mm² minimum copper wire
- Hot swap operation: Pull module latch fully open before extraction; push latch closed after full insertion to lock electrical contact
Application Scenarios
- Oil & gas refinery serial analyzer communication (gas chromatograph, water quality monitor)
- Thermal power plant boiler auxiliary Modbus serial instruments
- Chemical batch process third-party serial flow computers and pH transmitters
- Water treatment plant remote serial pump controllers and turbidity sensors
- Pharmaceutical sterile production line serial barcode scanners and weighing modules
Operation & Maintenance Precautions
- Do not disassemble module shell; no user-serviceable internal components exist
- All field wiring must be power off before connection or disconnection to avoid surge damage to transceivers
- Avoid routing serial signal cables parallel with high-power AC drive cables to reduce EMI noise
- Regularly inspect LED fault indicators during daily patrols; record fault codes for troubleshooting
- Storage environment must maintain controlled humidity to prevent PCB oxidation; avoid direct sunlight exposure
- If operating in high-vibration cabinet, reinforce carrier rack mounting screws quarterly
- Calibration is not required for this communication card; only reconfigure serial protocol parameters via DeltaV engineering workstation
