Product Short Description
Product Name
505E Turbine Control (Digital Governor for Steam Turbines)
Product Introduction
The Woodward 9907-167 is a 505E-series digital turbine controller specifically designed for extraction/admission steam turbines. It provides integrated control of main steam valve and extraction valve, with decoupled speed and extraction pressure regulation. The unit features a NEMA 4 panel-mounted enclosure with an integrated operator control panel (OCP).

Functional Features
-
Dual independent actuator driver outputs (4–20 mA or 20–160 mA selectable):
-
Output #1 → main steam governor valve
-
Output #2 → extraction/admission valve
-
-
Closed-loop speed control: isochronous (islanded), droop (paralleled), and multi-unit load distribution.
-
Extraction/admission pressure composite regulation — decouples speed from extraction pressure.
-
Multi-limit protection: valve position limits, min/max load, speed limits, extraction pressure limits.
-
Automatic start-up logic: acceleration, warm-up, critical-speed bypass, coast-down ramp, overspeed protection (103% / 110% two-stage).
-
Fault diagnostics: MPU open-wire, actuator short-circuit, AI loss, power failure, relay self-check with event logging.
-
Integrated OCP with 2-line text display for local configuration and monitoring.
Application Scenarios
-
Cogeneration (CHP): Extraction steam turbines balancing power generation and process steam supply.
-
Back-pressure / Admission Turbines: Simultaneous control of inlet and extraction valves.
-
Industrial Drive Turbines: Turbines driving compressors or pumps in refinery and chemical plants.
Working Principle
The 505E receives speed feedback from dual MPUs and process signals (extraction pressure, load, etc.) via analog inputs. Its 32-bit microprocessor executes PID control algorithms to regulate speed and extraction pressure independently. Two actuator outputs drive the main and extraction valves. Communication ports interface with DCS/PLC for remote monitoring and control.
Installation Requirements
-
Panel-cutout mount in a NEMA 4 enclosure front.
-
Provide 24 V DC (18–32 V) power with correct polarity.
-
Connect MPU speed sensors with proper shielding; observe phasing.
-
Wire actuator outputs to Woodward EG/PGA actuators or 4–20 mA servo valves.
-
Connect analog I/O and digital I/O per terminal assignment in the 505E manual.
-
Establish RS-485 Modbus link to DCS/PLC; RS-232 for local PC configuration.
Usage Precautions
-
Wear ESD grounding strap when handling the module.
-
Verify all field wiring matches signal type (4–20 mA or 0–10 V).
-
Do not exceed supply voltage range (18–32 V DC).
-
Ensure proper ventilation; do not block front panel.
-
Periodically review fault logs via OCP.
-
Keep firmware updated through RS-232 using Woodward software.
