Product Short Description
Product Name: Woodward DSS-2 Two-Channel Digital Speed Switch (P/N 8800-1001)
Product Overview: A two-channel electronic digital speed switch designed for engine applications, performing speed-related functions such as starter motor disable and engine overspeed protection. It monitors engine RPM via a magnetic pickup (MPU) input and controls two independent relays.

- Weight: 0.38 lbs (0.17 kg)
- EMC Compliance: ISO 14982:1998/E
Structural & Material Features: Compact, encapsulated enclosure with Euro-style terminal block for easy wiring. Two multi-turn potentiometers allow manual speed setpoint adjustment. The unit can be re-configured via ACT to act as a glow plug controller or engine autocrank controller.
Working Principle: The DSS-2 monitors engine speed via a magnetic pickup (MPU) input. Once engine speed exceeds the user-selected speed setpoint, the corresponding relay goes to the designated set condition, triggering outputs for starter disengagement, overspeed shutdown, and speed sequencing.
Application Scenarios: Intended as a sub-system for integration into construction/commercial and industrial engine systems by OEMs and industrial plants. Typical applications include generator sets, compressors, construction machinery, and farm vehicles. Functions include crank motor disconnect, overspeed/underspeed protection, engine load control, PTO protection, and shift inhibition.
Installation & Usage Notes: Mount the unit where vibration and temperature are within specified ranges. Wire battery positive/negative (9–30 VDC, reverse protected), two Form-C relays (10 A continuous, independent C/NC/NO contacts), and MPU positive/negative (2 Vac minimum at 1000 Hz, factory set for 2500–5000 Hz). Add external diodes for transient suppression with inductive loads. Do not remove the PCB from the cabinet unnecessarily; handle only by edges with anti-static precautions.
