Product Short Description
Product Name: AutoMax Remote I/O Communications Module
Product Introduction: A Remote I/O communications module for Reliance Electric AutoMax PLC and DCS 5000 systems. It serves as a master or slave interface on the proprietary AutoMax Remote I/O network, translating data between the high-speed backplane protocol and the synchronous serial network protocol used for distributed I/O.

Functional Features:
-
Acts as either master or slave on the AutoMax Remote I/O network.
-
Enables distributed I/O over long distances while centralizing processing.
-
Reduces home-run wiring by using a single serial link to remote drops.
-
On-board diagnostics for troubleshooting and network reliability.
-
Anti-interference design for industrial environments.
-
Simple installation and configuration.
Application Scenarios: Large-scale industrial automation where field I/O is physically distributed—automobile assembly lines, robotic cells, conveyor systems, paper mills, pump and valve stations in continuous process plants.
Working Principle: The module converts the parallel backplane data from the AutoMax processor into a synchronous serial stream transmitted over the Remote I/O network at 845 k baud. It polls remote I/O drops, collects their input data, and dispatches output commands. As a master it initiates communication; as a slave it responds to a master module.
Installation Requirements:
-
Insert into an AutoMax/DCS 5000 rack slot.
-
Connect the Remote I/O network cable to the module’s network port.
-
Terminate the network properly at both ends to avoid signal reflection.
-
Ensure the total cable length does not exceed 3000 ft (914 m).
-
Configure as master or slave per system architecture.
Usage Precautions:
-
Respect the maximum communication distance and baud rate to maintain signal integrity.
-
Properly terminate the network; unterminated lines cause communication errors.
-
Protect the module from excessive vibration, humidity and temperature beyond the rated range.
-
As a legacy product, verify compatibility with existing AutoMax firmware before replacement.
