Product Short Description

Product Overview

Dedicated serial communication fieldbus module for Foxboro EcoStruxure DCS distributed control system, designated SPU232 for RS232 serial protocol conversion and third-party field device data access. Part code suffix .2 and 029.366 817 define hardware revision version and factory part identification number. It acts as bridge between DCS control station and serial-based industrial instruments, analyzers, flow meters and remote monitoring equipment, converting serial RS232 protocol data into DCS internal database readable digital signals.

Function Features

  1. Multi-Protocol Driver Downloadable Architecture: Load custom serial communication drivers via DCS workstation software to support Modbus RTU, ASCII, HART serial, analyzer proprietary serial protocols without hardware replacement
  2. Real-time Serial Data Buffer: 128KB on-board data cache to eliminate serial communication frame loss under high data refresh frequency
  3. Bi-directional Data Transmission: Realize two-way signal transmission: DCS sends setpoint commands to field serial devices, module uploads field measurement value and alarm status back to DCS operator station
  4. Communication Fault Diagnosis: Built-in serial port frame error, parity error, timeout fault detection with real-time fault status uploaded to DCS alarm database
  5. Hot Swap Capability: Support online module replacement without shutting down entire DCS control rack, no system process interruption during maintenance
  6. Isolated Serial Circuit Design: RS232 port fully galvanically isolated from DCS backplane bus to prevent field equipment ground interference damaging main control rack

Application Scenarios

  • Chemical plant online gas/liquid analyzers serial data collection to DCS
  • Power plant boiler flue gas monitoring instruments RS232 signal integration
  • Water treatment flow meters, pH analyzers serial communication access to DCS control system
  • Pharmaceutical factory temperature/humidity environmental monitoring serial sensor data uploading
  • Oil refinery online composition analyzers serial protocol data conversion
  • Building HVAC central control serial monitoring equipment DCS integration

Material Composition & Structural Characteristics

  • Module Housing: Standard 6U vertical rack module plastic housing, black flame-retardant PC material
  • Main PCB Board: Multi-layer industrial PCB with full conformal coating for moisture and chemical vapor resistance
  • Communication Isolation Component: High-speed optocoupler isolation chip separating serial port and backplane circuit
  • Connector Components: Gold-plated DB9 RS232 port connector; gold-plated spring backplane contact pins for stable rack bus communication
  • Mounting Form: Vertical plug-in installation inside Foxboro I/A Series standard 12-slot I/O rack

Working Principle

  1. DCS backplane bus transmits control command and parameter configuration data to SPU232 module via rack contact pins
  2. On-board DSP chip executes downloaded serial protocol driver to send query frames out through RS232 port to field serial instruments
  3. Receive response data frames from field equipment, perform parity check and data parsing
  4. Convert parsed analog measurement values, digital status and fault signals into standardized DCS DCI block data format
  5. Upload processed digital data back to DCS control station database via backplane bus for operator station display, PID control logic and historical trend recording

Installation Requirements

  1. Plug into any free slot of Foxboro standard I/A Series I/O rack; lock module front panel fixing screw to avoid loose backplane contact under vibration
  2. RS232 field wiring use shielded 3-core serial communication cable, maximum transmission distance 15 meters at 9600bps baud rate
  3. Install rack cabinet cooling fan to maintain internal cabinet temperature within -10°C to +60°C operating range
  4. Connect rack cabinet protective earth ground with dedicated grounding cable to reduce EMC interference
  5. Class G3 environment installation requires cabinet air conditioning to control relative humidity within 10–90% non-condensing

Usage Precautions

  1. Match baud rate, data bit, parity and stop bit parameters completely consistent between module and field serial instrument; inconsistent parameters lead to communication loss
  2. Do not hot swap module during active serial data transmission; pause DCS serial communication task before replacement to avoid data frame loss
  3. Avoid routing RS232 serial cable parallel with high-power inverter and motor power cable to suppress electromagnetic interference
  4. Regularly check DB9 connector pin corrosion every 12 months in corrosive chemical plant environments
  5. Backup custom serial protocol driver files in DCS workstation hard disk before module maintenance for fast reloading after replacement
