Product Short Description
Manufacturer: Fireye (Fortive Corporation, formerly part of GEMS Sensors)
Product Overview:
The BLL510 is a UV flame scanner designed for industrial burner management. It detects ultraviolet radiation emitted by flames to confirm safe burner operation and provide flame-failure protection.

Functional Features:
- Self-diagnostic with LED status indicators
- Flame intensity monitoring (analog output proportional to UV signal)
- Fail-safe design — output de-energizes on loss of flame or power
- Adjustable sensitivity via front-panel potentiometer
- False flame rejection via modulation frequency detection
- Compatible with Fireye control systems (LFL, LKIC, etc.)
Working Principle:
The scanner uses a UV-sensitive photomultiplier tube (PMT) behind a sapphire window. Flames emit UV radiation in the 185–260 nm band. The PMT converts UV photons to electrical current. The electronics filter out ambient UV noise (sunlight, welding arcs) using modulation detection — real flames flicker at specific frequencies (typically 5–30 Hz), while false sources do not.
Advantages:
- Fast response (<4 sec) for rapid burner shutdown
- Sapphire lens resists fouling in dirty environments
- Stainless steel housing withstands corrosive atmospheres
- Wide range of burner sizes detectable
Applicable Industries:
Oil refineries, petrochemical plants, power generation boilers, waste incineration, food processing ovens, metal furnaces
Installation Requirements:
- Mount scanner with direct line-of-sight to flame
- Maintain minimum 3 feet (1 meter) distance from flame
- Use 3/4″ NPT conduit for cable entry
- Ground the housing to plant ground
- Lens must be kept clean — install purge air system in dirty environments
Usage Notes:
- Never look directly at the flame through the scanner lens without proper eye protection
- Clean sapphire lens weekly in dirty environments
- Verify detection range during commissioning for each burner
- Replace scanner if response time exceeds 6 seconds
