Working Principle
The GE 8102-HO-IP receives Ethernet frames on either of its two SFP fiber ports. The internal ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) performs wire-speed Layer 2 switching by examining the destination MAC address of each incoming frame. The frame is forwarded to the appropriate egress port based on the MAC address table, which is populated dynamically through learning or configured statically. For VLAN-tagged frames (802.1Q), the switch processes the VLAN ID and forwards the frame only to ports belonging to the same VLAN. QoS engine classifies frames into one of four priority queues based on 802.1p or DSCP markings and schedules transmission using Weighted Round Robin or Strict Priority algorithms. The managed controller runs the SNMP agent, web server, and CLI interface, allowing remote configuration and monitoring. Redundant power inputs are monitored continuously; if Input A fails, the unit switches to Input B within 10 ms without interrupting network traffic.

Installation Requirements
- Mount on 35 mm DIN rail (EN 60715) or wall mount using the supplied bracket
- Maintain minimum 50 mm clearance on all sides for ventilation
- Route fiber optic cables away from high-voltage power cables (minimum 200 mm separation)
- Use duplex LC fiber patch cables with 9/125 µm single-mode or 50/125 µm multi-mode fiber
- Use shielded twisted-pair cable for power wiring (minimum 18 AWG)
- Ground the chassis to the panel ground bus using minimum 10 AWG copper wire
- Connect Input A to the primary DC power source and Input B to the redundant/backup source
- Do not exceed the maximum supply voltage of 30 VDC
- Torque all terminal connections to 1.2 Nm (10.6 in-lbs)
- Install SFP modules by aligning the module with the cage and pushing firmly until the latch clicks
- Verify link status LEDs are illuminated after SFP insertion
Usage Precautions
- Do not exceed the maximum supply voltage of 30 VDC — permanent damage to internal components will occur
- Do not reverse the power supply polarity — internal TVS diode will clamp, but repeated reverse polarity will degrade protection
- Do not operate the unit in environments exceeding +75°C ambient temperature — internal ASIC will throttle or shut down
- Do not exceed the rated vibration level of 5 g RMS — mechanical stress on SFP cages will cause link drops
- Do not insert or remove SFP modules while the unit is powered — this will cause a link reset on the affected port
- Do not use non-MSA-compliant SFP modules — this voids the warranty and risks damage to the SFP cage
- Do not block the ventilation openings on the top and bottom of the unit — overheating will occur
- Perform a link integrity test after any fiber cable routing changes
- Replace SFP modules only with GE-approved or MSA-compliant equivalents
- Store the unit in a dry environment with relative humidity below 85%
- Do not expose the unit to direct sunlight for extended periods — UV degradation of the front panel will occur
- Perform a firmware update only using GE-approved firmware images — unauthorized firmware voids the warranty
Warranty
- Standard Warranty: 36 months from date of shipment
- Extended Warranty: Available up to 60 months (GE Digital Care program)
- Warranty Exclusions: Damage caused by overvoltage, reverse polarity, physical impact, unauthorized firmware, SFP module incompatibility, or operation outside specified environmental limits
